Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 data imports limitations

By - September 5, 2014

We get a lot of questions as far as data imports and more specifically updating. Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013, just like every version of Dynamics CRM up to this point, has an out of the box data import routine. This is nice for a simple data import but there are limitations that are presented right away that makes the data import a tool that should be utilized for limited migrations.

  1. First limitation is for data integrations. There is no good way to ‘schedule’ an import. In the same way, there is no way to perform an import in real time.
  2. The import wizard does not allow for updates. Duplicate detection rules can be put in place to prevent duplicates, but in the situation where you are looking to import a list to update records with more current data, you are not able to do the update.
  3. Logic and data transformation cannot be done through the import wizard. Mapping to certain lookup and picklist fields can be done.

In general, we recommend using a third party tool to do data migrations and data imports. The price tag, sometimes shocks people, but as in life, you get what you pay for. These tools will give you the ability to overcome Dynamics CRM’s data import wizard limitations. We typically recommend Scribe Software, but have also had companies utilize CozyRoc. Alternatively, we do also write custom code to utilize Dynamics CRM’s web services.  Bottom line, there are options depending on your needs and budget.  You should consult a Microsoft Dynamics CRM certified specialist to help you identify the best solution for your organization.  RSM is a certified Microsoft Dynamics partner and elite partner of Scribe. Contact our professionals for more information at crm@mcgladrey.com.  If you have any questions or comments, leave them below or tweet us @RSMUStech
