Introduction of Business Rules in Dynamics CRM was a game changer in Dynamics CRM 2013. Business Rules have really made our lives easier for simple intuitive steps like show/hide a field, lock/unlock fields, etc. Prior to Dynamics CRM 2013 we had to write scripts for these and it was an overhead to maintain them. However, things have changed and with the release of Dynamics 365, Microsoft has upped the game one more time on Business Rules. I am certainly excited about the new changes to Business Rules and thought I should share it with you!

Business Rules are still accessible from Customization > Entity > Business Rules. However, when you click New to create a new Business Rule you’ll be presented with a new UI with drag and drop features:

In Dynamics 365, building a Business Rule is like building a flow chart where you can define conditions and actions by dragging and dropping from the right section to the main area. You can select Flow and Actions under the Components tab and to define their logic go to Properties tab.

Business Rules has a new action step called Recommendations. This is useful when you want to display recommendations based on an action or condition. Business Rules also include two boxes in the main area: Minimap and Business Rule (Text View). Minimap can be used to navigate to the components of the business rule. Business Rule (Text View) will automatically build the code for the business rule based on the steps added. Text view is a quick and easy way to read through your business rule.

Two additional features which I think are very useful: Snapshot and Validate. Snapshot is a great way to quickly take a picture of your Business Rule to review it with your stakeholders rather than going into CRM customization area and overwhelming the stakeholders. The Validate feature will help you validate your business rule against any errors prior to activating the Business Rule.
